Mauritius

The Indian Ocean island that feels, somehow, like a piece of home — and is better for it.

NORTH COAST · MAURITIUS · JUNE

Mauritius occupies a specific position in the Indian Ocean — between the Maldives (which is purer, flatter, and more a resort-island experience) and the Seychelles (which has the granite landscape and the inner island character). What Mauritius has that neither of those offers is an actual island identity: a culture, a history, an Indo-Mauritian and Creole population, a food scene built on those two traditions, a mountain that rises from the sea at the southwestern tip, and enough variation between its coasts to support genuinely different experiences within a single trip. It is also, for Indian travellers specifically, one of the more culturally immediate destinations in the Indian Ocean — the vegetarian food is understood, the Hindi is heard, and the familiar registers of the cuisine make it feel like somewhere India has always had a presence, which it has.

The coast question is the one the trip is built around. The east coast (Belle Mare) has the longest white-sand beach and the calmest lagoon; the Four Seasons Anahita and the One&Only Le Saint Géran are the anchor properties here, and either is among the best resort stays in the Indian Ocean. The south and west coast is more dramatic — the Le Morne Brabant mountain rises almost sheer from the peninsula, the lagoon here is the most photographed in Mauritius, and the kite-surfing is the best on the island because the trade winds hit the south coast with consistency. The north is more animated and more accessible, good for families who want variety alongside the beach. Most ten-night trips split two of these coasts — the east coast for the beach days, the south for the mountain and the drama.

The seasonal structure matters more than on most Indian Ocean islands. May to August is the austral winter — dry, warm rather than hot, the offshore winds keeping the humidity honest — and this is the window that produces the best Mauritius experience. December to March is cyclone season and very humid. The difference between the same hotel in July and in February is significant.

Why with Alp

The coast comparison, the season, and the honest Indian Ocean triangle (Mauritius versus Maldives versus Seychelles) are the first three things we address on any Mauritius enquiry. The Four Seasons Anahita is a preferred-program booking — the same rate, breakfast and credit attached. The Le Morne peninsula properties and the One&Only Le Saint Géran are also in the Virtuoso network. The vegetarian brief, unusually for the Indian Ocean, is the easiest we handle anywhere in this region.

The places

Where to go, and when

North Coast (Grand Baie / Turtle Bay)

The social, accessible north. Club Med is here; so is the One&Only Le Saint Géran at Belle Mare on the east coast. More animation and activity than the south, good snorkelling off the beach, the town of Grand Baie for shopping and restaurants.

South & West Coast (Le Morne Peninsula)

The dramatic end of the island — the Le Morne Brabant mountain rising from the sea, the UNESCO-listed mountain, the turquoise lagoon that stretches south with almost no one in it. The most cinematically beautiful part of Mauritius. The Lux* Grand Gaube and Heritage Le Telfair sit here.

East Coast (Belle Mare)

The longest beach on the island, a 12km stretch of white sand facing a calm lagoon. The Four Seasons Anahita and the One&Only Le Saint Géran occupy the best positions. Quieter than the north, more complete than the south as a pure beach experience.

Mauritius, our ways

From our travellers

"Japan was on our list for years, but we never quite knew where to start. Abhi built something we would never have found on our own — a private ryokan in the mountains, a tea ceremony that wasn't on any travel site, Kyoto without the crowds. Every day felt considered."
