Rio Sagrado, A Belmond Hotel, Sacred Valley
URUBAMBA, SACRED VALLEY, PERU
Overview
Deep in Peru’s Sacred Valley, Rio Sagrado, a Belmond Hotel, offers an unparalleled connection with nature. Set on the banks of the Urubamba River, the retreat is crafted from natural materials using ancient techniques. Encircling it are lush gardens threaded with streams and waterfalls, where tiny hummingbirds hover over jewel-like blooms.
Rooms are set on raised terraces with expansive windows overlooking the river. Bright, airy spaces, they radiate Andean charm with vibrant textiles and soft alpaca wools. Relaxing hours can be spent in the heated pool or reclining in a hammock. For the ultimate serenity, Mayu Willka Spa, a beautiful wood, stone and glass complex, offers rejuvenating rituals. Private holistic fitness sessions blend jogging, yoga and meditation.
Fine Peruvian-fusion cuisine is served at El Huerto, where specialities include local trout, Andean grains and vegetables from the valley. Daily pisco tastings are staged in the bar. At El Jardin, lunches are served at sun-dappled tables by the river, featuring organic produce from the gardens.
Families can enjoy feeding the hotel’s baby alpacas or relaxing under the stars on movie nights. Activities to explore the Sacred Valley range from horse riding treks to white-water rafting. Spiritual ceremonies with an Andean shaman give thanks to Mother Earth.
At a lower altitude than Cusco, Rio Sagrado offers the perfect place to acclimatise to an Andean adventure. Machu Picchu can be visited on a day trip. Hiram Bingham, a Belmond Train, calls at the hotel’s own train station.
