CUSCO, PERU
Our take
Fourteen thousand feet hits differently when your suite is pumping oxygen and a butler materializes before you've finished the thought. Palacio Nazarenas — a converted convent — earns its price: Cusco's only outdoor infinity pool, a spa with Inca stonework visible through the glass floor, 55 suites wrapped in cloistered silence. This is for the traveler who wants altitude handled and history underfoot. Walk to Plaza de Armas in minutes; return to something untouchable. Skip it if you need a sprawling resort — the intimacy here is the point, not a compromise.

Overview
Palacio Nazarenas, A Belmond Hotel in Cusco, began life in the 1500s as a conquistador’s palatial home. Later, the building was converted into a convent. Now an urban sanctuary, it boasts a wealth of contemporary indulgences while retaining its timeless appeal. Inca stones, 16th-century frescoes and cloistered courtyards meet cutting-edge cuisine, a fabulous spa and the city’s first outdoor infinity-edge pool.
A short stroll from vibrant Plaza de Armas, this Peruvian retreat has just 55 oxygen-enriched suites, each brimming with character. Authentic touches include embroidered silk coverlets on four-poster beds, handpainted art and soap crafted from homegrown flowers. Some suites offer views of Cusco and the majestic mountains beyond from their balconies or terraces. A private bar, underfloor heating, Bose sound systems and 24-hour butler service mean comfort is assured.
In the main courtyard, an ancient stone fountain and Inca-style water channels create a relaxing space to while away the hours. Andean afternoon tea can be enjoyed in the Secret Garden, where an exquisite spread is accompanied by the freshest herbal tisanes. At chic destination restaurant Senzo, guests are led on a gastronomic Peruvian journey, savouring ingredients from the hotel’s garden.
In the spa, a glass floor reveals ancient Inca stonework below. Healing organic treatments use coca leaves, herbs and salts. Onsite activities include cooking classes, salsa dance lessons and art tours of the ornate, gilded chapel. Further afield, experiences range from guided walks around the artisan San Blas district to adventures in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
