Ashford Castle
MAYO, IRELAND
Overview
Passing through Ashford Castle’s grand stone gates unlocks the magic of an inimitable estate set in a stunningly unspoilt corner of the West of Ireland, just a stone’s throw from the Wild Atlantic Way. Standing sentinel on the shores Lough Corrib for over 800 years, the castle sits at the heart of 350 acres of such splendid proportions, that spending any amount of time in its grounds creates indelible memories.
Once home to the Guinness family and today a magnificent multi-generational resort, Ashford Castle has been lovingly led by Niall Rochford for more than 20 years, who leads a long-serving team which passionately cares about every single guest. The estate encompasses 83 rooms and suites, a sumptuous spa and gym, an equestrian centre, a brand-new leisure complex, Ireland’s School of Falconry, a nine-hole golf course, an array of restaurants and bars, an extensive wine cellar and even a luxe cinema.
Experience unforgettable fine dining, sip a cocktail in the same room that once hosted King George V, stay in a historic boathouse in splendid isolation, sleep in the suite where Oscar Wilde once stayed, fly a Harris Hawk, ride on horseback through the woodlands or try your hand at archery – anything and everything is possible at glorious Ashford Castle.
Sustainability Initiatives +
At Ashford Castle, sustainability underpins life across the estate, ensuring exceptional five-star luxury is delivered with environmental and social integrity.
In 2025, we partnered with EarthCheck and expanded our kitchen garden, deepening our focus on seasonal, estate-grown produce. A comprehensive carbon reduction plan guides reductions across energy, water and waste, supported by robust monitoring. Recent investments include a high-efficiency boiler system and expanded EV charging for guests travelling by electric vehicle.
Biodiversity restoration is a key priority. In partnership with Hometree, we are removing invasive species and replanting native woodland using trees propagated on the estate, restoring habitats and ecological balance.
Sustainability is seamlessly integrated into the guest experience, from plastic-free rooms and hybrid estate vehicles to bespoke refillable amenities exclusive to Ashford Castle. Regenerative growing practices, including Korean Natural Farming, support our kitchen garden and orchard, which guests can explore through guided tours.
Our commitment extends into the local community through local hiring, staff accommodation in nearby villages, and support for initiatives such as Cong Village Tidy Towns. We champion fair pay and gender-balanced leadership across the estate.
Ashford Castle was the first five-star hotel in Ireland to commit to Net Zero by 2050 and has been recognised by the Country & Town House Sustainable Hotel Awards.
