Copacabana Palace, A Belmond Hotel, Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro Timeless Glamour ★★★★ Forbes 🗝🗝 MICHELIN Ideal for: History Buffs, Luxury Seekers

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

Our take

White palace on Copacabana, semi-Olympic pool gleaming above the Atlantic, antique-furnished rooms that have hosted everyone from heads of state to rock royalty — this is old-world Rio at its most unapologetic. The Michelin-starred dining and private beach loungers seal it for anyone who wants the city's mythology, not just its postcard. Come for three nights minimum. But if you're chasing sleek and minimal, the Palace's gilded bones will feel like a costume — find somewhere that fits your tempo instead.

Notable Features

  • Famed semi-Olympic swimming pool
  • Three Michelin-starred restaurants
  • Private beach sun loungers

💡 Insider Tip

Overview

Since its doors swung open in 1923, Copacabana Palace, a Belmond Hotel, has been Rio de Janeiro’s most glamorous address. Throughout the 1930s its Golden Room hosted performers from Ella Fitzgerald to Nat King Cole. In 1933, it featured in the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie Flying Down to Rio. Nearly 80 years later it was the backdrop to the Rolling Stones’ biggest ever concert.

Among its interiors, guests find an oasis of calm just steps away from the bustling city. The celebrated semi-Olympic swimming pool is the ideal place to swim and socialise. It’s surrounded by three of Rio’s finest restaurants. Michelin-starred MEE boasts a mouthwatering pan-Asian menu and 25 varieties of sake. Michelin-starred Ristorante Hotel Cipriani serves authentic Italian specialities. Vibrant Pérgula offers casual poolside dining. For a taste of Carioca nightlife, Copacabana Piano Bar hits the spot with gin cocktails. Perfect for drinks before dinner at the restaurant.

Rooms and suites are inviting refuges, individually designed with antique furniture and original artworks. Seven penthouse suites on the sixth floor share a private swimming pool with spectacular views. Beds are so comfortable, Keith Richards’ wife wanted to take one home.

In the spa, heavenly treatments harness the power of Brazilian botanicals. To stay in shape, there’s a tennis court and fitness centre. Just over the road is iconic Copacabana Beach, where guests enjoy private sun loungers and umbrellas.

Concierges are on hand to arrange exciting bespoke excursions, such as samba school visits, architectural tours and experiences atop Sugarloaf Mountain.
