SOWAKA
KYOTO, JAPAN
Our take
Sowaka occupies a former tea house in the thick of Gion, and it shows — the bones are real, the wooden beams earned. La Bombance holds a Michelin star and sits downstairs; Kiyomizu-dera is a walk away. This is Kyoto for people who want to feel the city rather than photograph it. Come for two or three nights, move slowly, spend money on the meal. If you need a pool, a spa circuit, or anything resembling a resort rhythm, look elsewhere — Sowaka has no interest in that conversation.
Notable Features
- Former tea house architecture
- Michelin-starred restaurant La Bombance Gion
- Proximity to Kiyomizu-dera Temple
