The April conundrum
Ask us where to go in April and watch us hesitate. No other month splits so cleanly down the middle: it holds the cherry blossom in central Japan and the first unbearable heat in the Gulf, the reopening of the Amalfi hotels and the start of the Golden Week crush, all inside thirty days. The right April trip is entirely a question of which April you mean. Here is the map.
Japan in April: the window and the trap
Late March to mid-April is the sakura window in central Japan. The trap is Golden Week: the series of public holidays running from late April to early May that generates the largest domestic travel surge of the Japanese year. The strategic April Japan trip arrives in the first two weeks of the month (catching the bloom in Kyoto and Tokyo), exits before April 27th (when Golden Week begins), and does not include Hakone, Nikko or Osaka on the April 28th to May 5th segment under any circumstances.
Morocco in April
April is Morocco’s second-best month after October. The heat that makes the medinas uncomfortable from June through August has not arrived. The rains of February and March have ended. The Atlas mountains have snow on the peaks but passable roads. Ramadan in April, when it falls in that month — it shifts annually, verify before planning — changes the character of the cities: quieter during the day, electric after iftar, some restaurants with adjusted hours. Neither better nor worse; different.
“The trap in April Japan is Golden Week. Exit before the 27th.”
Europe in April
April is when Europe begins to feel like itself again after the winter closure. The Amalfi hotels reopen. The Rome tourist season begins before it becomes unmanageable. Athens and the Greek islands are in shoulder mode — the sea is still cool but the towns are accessible and the light is excellent. Switzerland is in its awkward moment: the snow is patchy at mid-altitude, the walking paths not yet open, but the valley floors are blooming and the rail infrastructure is at full operation. If Switzerland is on the itinerary, book the higher altitudes (Zermatt, Wengen) only if the snow conditions are confirmed for the specific dates.
The Gulf in April
April is the month when the Gulf climate tips. In early April, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are warm but manageable — 30 to 32 degrees, low humidity. By the last week of April and into May, the temperatures climb toward 40 and the humidity follows. If the Gulf is the destination for April, go in the first two weeks. If the dates are fixed in late April, the argument for the Gulf becomes the indoor infrastructure (the malls, the dining, the hotel itself as the destination) rather than any outdoor experience.
April rewards precision more than any month on the calendar. Tell us your exact dates and we’ll tell you which April you’ve actually got — and where it’s worth pointing them.
