Petra & Wadi Rum

Petra and Wadi Rum: Past meets present under desert stars.

The Siq swallows you whole. Sandstone walls press close, rose-red and streaked with mineral shadow, and the noise of the world outside stops. You walk the narrow gorge toward Petra’s Treasury, and the scale of what the Nabataeans carved here lands like a quiet shock. Stay for the full day. The site earns it. Then the itinerary shifts south to Wadi Rum. Come in spring or autumn — the desert heat is serious, and timing matters. At night, with no city light for miles, the sky above the valley fills completely. You stop trying to count stars. Alp Travel Co. handles the architecture of the trip so you don’t have to. Your guides are specialists, not generalists. Your hotels are chosen for proximity and quality, not just brand name. Every excursion runs at the right hour — early enough to beat the crowds at the Treasury, late enough to catch the desert light turning the rock faces amber. The details are already solved. You just have to show up.

Rose-red cliffs in the morning, open desert by afternoon, and no city light for fifty miles at night.

DAY 1

Amman

The Four Seasons Amman sits on the Fifth Circle ridge with a clean sightline west over the city’s limestone hills — a single night here is enough to land, eat well, and orient before the drive south. Dinner at Sufra, a Jordanian kitchen set inside a restored 1940s villa on Rainbow Street, is the right first meal in the country: slow-cooked lamb, meze, and an early introduction to the food before the desert begins.

  • Evening walk on Rainbow Street and Jabal Amman · 1.5h
  • Dinner at Sufra Restaurant · 2h
  • Amman Citadel and Roman Theatre morning visit · 1.5h Opens at 8am; allow 90 minutes before the 10am departure south to avoid traffic on the Desert Highway.
Private car · 3h Three-hour private transfer south from Amman via the Desert Highway or the slower, more scenic King's Highway.
DAYS 2–4

Wadi Musa — Movenpick Resort Petra

The Movenpick Resort Petra is the only five-star hotel within the archaeological site boundary; its back gate opens directly onto the path leading down to the Siq, removing any transfer on peak mornings. The stone courtyard falls quiet by 9pm once day-trippers have gone, and the kitchen opens at 5:30am for guests walking to the Treasury at first light. Three nights is the minimum to move through Petra without choosing between the Monastery and everything else.

  • Dawn walk through the Siq to the Treasury · 2h Gates open at 6am; arrive by 6:15am to clear the Siq before tour buses enter around 8am. The light on the Treasury facade is strongest 7–8am.
  • Full-day Petra circuit with specialist Bedouin guide · 7h Covers the Royal Tombs, Colonnaded Street, Qasr al-Bint, and the Byzantine Church mosaic floor. Request a guide through the site office rather than a hotel concierge — the specialists know the back routes.
  • The Monastery (Ad Deir) trail and summit viewpoint · 3.5h 850 rock-cut steps. Start after 3pm when the sun moves off the upper face and the heat is manageable.
  • Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) morning visit · 2h A short drive north from Wadi Musa; rarely crowded even in October peak. Combine with an early breakfast before the main site opens.
  • High Place of Sacrifice and Wadi Farasa descent · 3h Walk the full loop: ascend via the Processional Way staircase, descend through the carved garden triclinium. Do not reverse — the descent is the better half.
Private car · 1h 30m Ninety-minute private transfer south from Wadi Musa through the Aqaba road junction to the Wadi Rum village checkpoint.
DAYS 5–6

Wadi Rum — Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp

Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp sits in a protected valley ringed by sandstone massifs; the private bubble tents face east, which puts the sunrise directly on the bed without leaving it. Dinner is served Bedouin-style on floor cushions inside the main tent, the fire stays lit past midnight, and the absence of artificial light is total. Two nights allows a full jeep day across the protected area and a slow final morning before the drive north to Amman or the transfer to Aqaba.

  • Full-day 4x4 jeep tour through Wadi Rum Protected Area · 6h Spans Lawrence's Spring, Khazali Canyon Nabataean inscriptions, and the red sand dunes at Um Sabatah. Arrange through camp to ensure the same driver for both days.
  • Sunset from the red sand dunes above camp · 1.5h
  • Stargazing from camp with Bedouin guide · 2h No measurable light pollution within 50km. The Milky Way core is visible on clear nights from March through November.
  • Dawn walk on the valley floor before breakfast · 1h Temperature is comfortable by 5:30am in spring and autumn. The sandstone faces turn amber for roughly 20 minutes after sunrise.
  • Camel ride through the valley floor with camp guide · 2h
