The Northern Circuit and Zanzibar's Serenity

A elephant steps to the water hole at dusk, close enough that you can hear it drink. That’s your view from the infinity pool at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti — and it sets the tone for everything that follows. This trip moves through three distinct landscapes: the open plains of the Serengeti, the dense wildlife bowl of Ngorongoro Crater, and the coral-fringed coast of Zanzibar. Time it for June through August and you catch the Great Migration. Wildebeest cross the Mara River in columns that stretch to the horizon. You don’t rush past it. Alp Travel Co. builds in the time to stay, watch, and go back the next morning. From the savannah you drop into the crater, then fly east to Zanzibar. Each stop asks something different of you. Each one delivers.

Three ecosystems in ten days: open Serengeti plains give way to a wildlife-dense volcanic crater, then a coral-fringed Indian Ocean coast.

How it unfolds

FLY IN
Flight International arrival into Kilimanjaro International Airport, then a charter flight to Seronera Airstrip in the central Serengeti.
DAYS 1–4

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti sits above a natural waterhole where elephants arrive each evening, visible from the infinity pool without leaving the property. The lodge runs twice-daily drives into the Northern Serengeti, positioning you directly at the Mara River crossing corridors during peak migration months. When a crossing goes, thousands of wildebeest move at once — but the wait at the river is part of the experience.

  • Mara River wildebeest crossing game drive · 6h Position at the river by 7 a.m. and wait; crossings can take hours to initiate but tens of thousands move when they do.
  • Hot-air balloon safari at dawn over the Serengeti plains · 4h Book at least 48 hours in advance; departs at first light and ends with a champagne bush breakfast on the plains.
  • Waterhole game viewing from the lodge pool deck · 1.5h Elephants arrive reliably at dusk; no vehicle needed.
  • Evening sundowner game drive with private guide · 2h
  • Night game drive with spotlight · 2.5h Confirm permits with the lodge; nocturnal sightings include genet, aardvark, and African wildcat.
Flight · 45m Charter flight from Seronera Airstrip to Lake Manyara Airstrip, then a 45-minute road transfer up to the Ngorongoro rim.
DAYS 5–6

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge perches on the caldera rim at 2,400 metres, each suite’s glass wall facing directly into the 260-square-kilometre bowl below. The crater floor holds one of the densest wildlife concentrations in Africa — lions, black rhino, elephant, and flamingo-edged soda lakes — all within a closed ecosystem where animals rarely leave. Drives descend 600 metres to the floor in under 20 minutes from the lodge gates.

  • Full-day crater floor Big Five game drive · 8h Descend at gate opening (7 a.m.); pack a picnic — no restaurants operate on the crater floor, and vehicles must ascend by 6 p.m.
  • Black rhino tracking with crater ranger · 3h Request a rhino-focused half-day drive when booking; rangers track current ranging areas daily.
  • Sunrise from the crater rim at the lodge · 1h Rim temperatures drop to 8°C at dawn; bring a layer regardless of lowland forecasts.
  • Maasai Boma cultural visit on the crater highlands · 2h
Flight · 4h Road transfer from the Ngorongoro rim to Kilimanjaro International Airport, then a direct flight to Zanzibar International Airport.
DAYS 7–10

The Residence Zanzibar

The Residence Zanzibar occupies a long coral-fringed stretch of the southwest coast, villas arranged around a lagoon that calms the Indian Ocean swell. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is 90 minutes north — its narrow alleys, carved Omani doors, and Darajani spice market require at least half a day on foot. The spice farms at Kizimbani sit 30 minutes inland, where cinnamon, cloves, and vanilla grow in actual ground rather than on a label.

  • Stone Town walking tour with a local guide · 3.5h Start by 8 a.m. to reach the Darajani market before midday heat; the old town is largely pedestrian and best covered slowly.
  • Spice farm tour at Kizimbani · 2.5h
  • Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll Marine Reserve · 4h Day boat trip from the resort; the atoll is a private conservation area — day access only unless staying at andBeyond Mnemba Island.
  • Sunset dhow cruise off the Zanzibar coast · 2h
  • Jozani Forest endemic red colobus monkey walk · 2h The Zanzibar red colobus exists nowhere else on earth; Jozani Forest is 45 minutes south of Stone Town.
