Our take
Hauser & Wirth turned a Victorian coaching inn in Braemar into something that shouldn't work — 14,000 pieces of art and antiques crammed into a Highland village pub — and yet it's one of the most viscerally alive hotels in Britain. The Clunie Dining Room is serious, the mountain views are the real thing, and every corridor feels curated rather than decorated. Come for immersion in place and obsessive collecting. If your idea of a great stay requires a spa, a pool, or a resort footprint, this will frustrate you.
